CHAPTER ONE - HERE

The Ignition
If you’d handed me a looking glass when I was a child, maybe I would’ve seen the future coming—seen how the fractures in my life would widen until they swallowed me whole. But childhood doesn’t offer that kind of clarity. I grew up inside a familiar dysfunction, a predictable chaos. It sounds strange, I know, but there was comfort in the consistency. I always knew who would hurt me and how. There were no surprises—just a practiced cycle of harm followed by an eerie calm, as if nothing had ever happened.

No one wondered what the blows, the insults, the dismissals did to my spirit. No one paused to think about how their brokenness was poisoning mine. That was life inside the gates of normalized chaos.
And now here I am—sitting in a gray, sterile room on the fifth floor of Balboa Naval Hospital, surrounded by people the Navy has labelled “severely damaged.” This wasn’t the future I dreamed of. I wanted to serve my country, to be the first woman in my family to wear the uniform with pride. I wanted honor. Purpose. A chance to prove myself.

Instead, I’m here—broken, ashamed, stripped of the identity I worked so hard to build. And seven months pregnant on top of it.

READ MORE

I hate that I let my life fold into this. I hate that I allowed myself to be pulled into this circle of haunted strangers. But I didn’t have many choices left. It was either die at the hands of my Hospital Corpsman husband or go AWOL and destroy everything I’d sacrificed to achieve. Neither option offered any real escape. So I landed here, in the one place I never imagined I’d be.

The damaged among the damaged.

The room is filled with vacant stares—eyes dulled by trauma, by secrets, by ghosts that refuse to let go. I know what it is to be damaged, but sitting here, surrounded by these silent, broken sailors and soldiers, I realize there are levels to this I haven’t yet understood. Their stillness unnerves me. I feel guilty, as if my suffering somehow doesn’t measure up—though I know nothing about their stories. Soon, I will. We all will. We’re required to sit in this battleship-gray room until each of us exposes our deepest wounds.
I’m a stubborn woman. I’ve survived too much to willingly hand over the pieces of my soul. I don’t want to share. I won’t share. The last time I trusted someone with my truth, I ended up here.

The fifth floor.

The place where the broken are stored.

The place where I now wait—angry, exhausted, and desperate for a way out that may not exist.

I close my eyes, inhaling the cold, antiseptic air.

This is my battlefield now. And I’m not sure I’m ready for the war.

Princess Onyx™ Hairy Business

Once there was a little girl named Jaydah who liked dressing up like a princess. She also loved spending time with her grandmother, Tata.

One day while playing dress up with her friends Zoey and Marissa, Jaydah found a long, black wig in her grandmother’s closet. She put the wig on and looked at herself in the mirror. She looked so pretty.

"I hate my hair!" exclaimed Princess Onyx.

"You have such beautiful hair," reassured Ruby, her Lady-in-Waiting, brushing the Princess’ hair into a ponytail.

"You're only saying that because I'm the princess,” Princess Onyx responded. “I like your hair. It's long and straight."

The Curio

Journal Entry-May 27, 1989

My life has been a colorful and emotional journey. I don’t know when I matured enough to recognize what had happened to me at eight-years old, and how different I would be at twenty-three. Yet, tortured memories of my childhood have enslaved me. My relationship with my parents has begun to recover, especially my relationship with my mother.

Often I want to disappear into another world, where I would remain untouched, undamaged. However, I am still here sitting in my beautifully, decorated studio apartment, a constant reminder of Mom, our tenuous relationship, her need for independence, and my need for her acceptance.

The other bugs began to tease. However, Rex ignored them and continued to gaze upon bright, blue Hydrangeas. “What a daydreamer,” said Sammie the Slug. “He’s such a geek!” laughed Willie the Potato Bug. “Don’t pay them any attention,” said Lady Bug Sue. “They are just jealous because they aren’t as smart as you.” Rex, the Nerdy Centipede, loves nature, especially flowers. Some of his friends think he is weird. Rex shows us that sometimes that not being popular is okay, that it is wonderful to be unique.

The Black Family Tree

Introduction

Bill Cosby and Dr. Poussaint’s book, Come On People, provides great insight into the ills of the Black community. The resounding theme is many in the Black community do not know who they are. Therefore, they will continue down a road of destruction until the Black community returns to its strong family history. This experiment is a result of a blog I wrote called “Black Community, Are You Angry Yet?” which challenged the Black community to take responsibility and be accountable to itself for its own ills. After much debate, comments, and dialogue with supporters and dissenters, the resounding concern is that Blacks do not know who they are. The ultimate goal of this project is to assess the impact on the participating Black families as they discover and document their family history and heritage.

Excerpt:

Remember

This project is about discovery. This is your legacy. Do not get frustrated, disappointed, or discouraged. If you find yourself feeling these emotions, just think about the wonderful information you will discover about your heritage. Keep your head up and press on. Remember, if you do not know all the answers, you can ask those closest to you, or go to your local library and a librarian can help guide you to where public records are located.

Black Family1

This project was born out of Ms. Burton’s passion for learning and discovery. Since childhood, she has been fascinated with history and culture. After reading Bill Cosby and Dr. Alvin Poussaint’s book, “Come One People” (2007), Ms. Burton realized the need to help Black children and their families learn how valuable they are as a people. Her motto: “Without a family map, we are destined to continue to go nowhere.”

This project consists of workshops to help Black children and their families discover their heritage by developing a family tree booklet. This family tree booklet will aid them in learning where they come from, to whom they belong, and most importantly, discover who they are. The expected outcome is not only a tangible record of their family history, but an improved self-image and self-esteem through discovery of their family’s long, rich heritage. This workshop will help Black family member find their way home together.

Princess Onyx™

One day, Jaydah came home from school crying. She ran to the sofa and buried her head in a pillow. Her grandmother, Tata, sat down next to her.

“Why are you crying?” Tata asked, caressing Jaydah’s back.

"Today a boy called me ugly because my skin is dark," said Jaydah as tears rolled down her cheeks.

"My beautiful gem," Tata said softly, gently wiping the tears from Jaydah's face. "You are far from ugly. You are beautiful and exquisite like a beautiful and precious gem."

This is the story of two beautiful little girls who learn to appreciate and love the color of their skin.

The Stranger in the Mirror Died Today

I sit before the mirror and see,
A stranger looking back at me;
Who is that betrayer?
Who is that slayer . . .
of the former me?

I stand before the mirror and see,
The shadow of the woman I used to be;
No longer the owner of my soul,
No longer my spirit do I hold.

Please, Stranger, leave me alone,
Away to hell you must go;
For I am here to reclaim . . .
The little dignity that remains.

So, Stranger in the mirror, you shall die today.
